288 - In Search of Wild Blackberries (Bucando Zarzas)

After the Euro cup I went looking for wild blacberries. I had been scoping them for the past few weeks and there were several patches of juicy berries all around. It should be like this for several weeks as other places still had green berries all over. As you can tell from the pictures above there's tons of blackberries all over. By the way Spain beat Germany 1-0.

During my search I came across these 2 ducks on the second picture you can see they've built a floatable nest with an egg in it.

A red wing blackbird or something like that.

I have to watch where I hike, poison oak seems to be everywhere, in some cases it's quite obvious.

291 - The Little Engine That Could (Sí se puede)

This picture is not very artistic or anything but it sums up what was in the back of my mind for most of the day.

Didn't get to do much today besides work. As I tried to make my way back to work after lunch my car wouldn't start. I had a feeling it was the battery but since I don't know much about cars I had to call David for some help. He wasn't around so Brendon and I (actually mostly Brendon) took the battery out and took it to Auto Zone to see if we could get it charged. It turns out the battery had lived its life and would not be able to hold a charge. Ended up buying a new battery and after installing it the car started right up. - Thanks Brendon.

No hize mucho hoy sólo trabajé.

Someone told me this is a weed but I think it's a flower. If it's a flower and it has no name I henceforth will call it punkulus floris or punk flower.

293 - Apocalypse Now (Apocalipsis)

This morning was still smokey from the wild fires. The day had an eerie feeling about it. Here's the sun, hours after Sunrise, as seen from my front lawn just before 8 this morning. The sun almost looks like a meteor coming towards earth. I think like that before my first cup of coffee.

California sigue quemando.

This is a closeup without adjusting the camera taken less than a minute after the picture above.

This is an altered photo from a picture taken at about the same time as the ones above. I've had a recurring dream that's my version of apocalypse. I dream that I go home to my mom's old house and after finding that my family does not live there anymore I go out the back door and as I look up I see the sun, the moon, and several other planets (in particular Saturn), and the sunlight is like it was today; the sky looks mostly red.

During an afternoon walk with my fellow employees we made comments about the sun. Someone said that the day had an apocalyptic view and feel to it. My mind right away flashed through scenes of the movie Apocalypse Now. I thought over and over about the line uttered by Marlon Brando towards the end of the movie... "the horror, the horror". Below is the youtube version of the horror.

There were several hundred (yes hundred) wild fires around California today. I tried to get a picture of the purple haze but none of the pictures showed that (I did play the Hendrix tune just to make me feel better). So this bird came by to do a quick pose.
The sunset showed a little bit of the haze. I felt the smoke from the fires on my lungs and tried to stay indoors.

This picture is not from today but I wanted to post it just because. I took it Friday the 20th. I did not post it because I could not get the craters of the moon to show but the tree branches in front (that I did not see at the time I took the pictures) came out pretty good.

I went to check out the Farmer's Market up in El Dorado Hills. There's a man made mini lake. Here's a couple of ducks, one of which has some lettuce on its tail. A guy wanted to show his son how ducks can eat green. The kid didn't care but the guy threw some greens he bought at the Farmer's Market. The ducks were fooled and went for the greens but did not consume.

There were about a dozen vendors at the Town Center farmer's market. I did not buy anything. At one point the El Dorado Sheriffs showed up to settle a theft case.

297 - Another Friday Another Concert (Conciertos)

I got out of work an hour before the usual time was able to make it to Cesar Chavez Park in time for the first act which was Aoarah. Talented bunch of players.

I did not get a chance to take pictures of Prieta since we were getting some chow.

Bella Música

Hot Pistol seemed to have a wider range of music.

Helper Monkeys wrapped up the show.

299 - My Garage

So I'm driving home from work today and as I try to go up my driveway I see two frickin Volkswagens where I wanted to park since it is my house. The black one (a Corado) has been there for over 2 years. The owner should owe (if we, let's say charge $90 per month for storage) about $2200. Now the owner of the 2nd vehicle (the red rabbit, and same owner as the one in the garage) thinks he can just park his broken piece of rabbit where my little car belongs. Like what the ...? Hope he gets both out soon but that's like expecting a miracle. I do however, being the religious person that I am, believe in miracles.

Somewhere in there is the beast and thousands upon thousands of car parts and oil, transmission, brake, and who knows what other kinds liquid stains cover my garage floor. If you were to go out the door on the left then you would see bumpers, wheels, and who knows what other Volkswagen parts. Two of his brothers have Volkswagens as well so hopefully they can use some of those parts. One day, hopefully in the near future (10-15 years), I will be able to walk from one end of the garage to the other without walking into someone else's car or car parts that are scattered all over the floor.

300 - Church Tower

There's a new church that I pass by every so often. About 3 weeks ago I passed by the grounds of this church but it did not look like it was being used yet. This picture was taken from an empty field and I think I'll take a closer look again this week to see if it's close to being open to the public. I don't know what denomination it is (not that it matters). We'll see.

Haber.

301 - Flower Bed - Flores

Sometimes I can just walk down the street from work and take a quick picture to use for my Picture a Day in this Blog. Here's a flower bed near a building down the street. My friend Katie already told me what these blue flowers are called but I've forgotten again.

The man behind the hat (not me)

I'm not sure if this was one jackrabbit or more than one but we kept seeing it all over the place. It was pretty quick but not quick enough for the dad.

The kids fishing off of Salmon Falls. Gabe called this morning but since he couldn't come we talked about him (just kidding). Anyway, we went to the lake and tried fishing at a couple of places but were not successful catching fish but quite successful at making this a great Father's Day.

303 - Daily Walks and Bike Rides; Tattoos

Almost everyday, when I'm at work, our group goes on a daily walk around the block. Today there were some bike races going around and around (not sure how many times) the same blocks we walk during our daily walks. I stayed around for about an hour. You can see part of the buildings we work at in the background.

We've (the kids and I, the Daily cousins and Cheryl) been thinking about a tattoo for all, kind of like a family tree and a family crest. Mariana, Brendon, and I went to the Convention Center for the All American Tattoo Fest. We took a couple of drawings that Mariana and Alice had talked about and started just in case we saw a good artist. I wanted to take some pictures of blooming flowers before we got to the convention center but Mariana did not want to stop.

Although we saw a lot of good artists we did not commit.

After the tattoo fest Mariana said I could stop and smell the roses. So here is a picture of a, and I'm guessing, Purple Rose of Cairo.

304 - Friday the 13th, A Good Day to be a Punk

Tonight's Friday Night Concerts at Chavez Park had 4 bands playing; the Goodniks, Baby, Final Summation, and the Secretions.
We got to Cesar Chavez Park just as Baby was ending their gig. We had already missed the Nogoodniks, Then the band above (Final Summation) came on for a good session.

The mosh pit grew and withered. It was around 100 degrees today. I stayed at the edge of the pit and the kids stayed within their mosh circle and did not bother others (for the most part). I was quite intrigued by the mohawks in the stage and audience. Great crowd.

The Secretions ended the show. A kid, late teens/early teens, told me the drummer is a 4th grade teacher at a local school. I was impressed.

The last show had members from other bands and friends of the Secretions end the concert. A lot of dirt was being kicked around since the pit was in a dirt area for the most part.

I hope to regain my hearing within the next few days, the ringing continues hours after the concert. Today was a good day to be a punk.

305 - Don't Step on it

Moved a couple of things around the side of the house. Since our neighbors have several dogs I did not want to step on what looked like dropping. A closer look revealed two good size mushrooms. A Cheech and Chong comedy skit came to mind about two neanderthals. I won't go into it but it ends with "... Good we don't step on it"

306 - Folsom Logo on Trash Can

Ok, so during the weekends it's no problem taking and posting daily photos. During weekdays it's beginning to find photo opportunities. So far I've tried to take a daily picture every day (obviously) and post it the same day. I'm beginning to wonder if I can keep it up for a whole year. I guess I just have to make sure I take some time every day for this purpose. It's harder than I thought.

I threw some garbage out and the picture above is the City of Folsom logo that's on all the trash cans the city collects garbage from once a week.

307 - Rojo

Mariana's paint brushes, the Bean's (our dog) ball, Marcus' diploma, Jelly Beans, Puma logo (bought a couple of tshirts), and a candle holder.

Ran out of time again today so once more the post was meant for Tuesday.

308 - Nature Walk

Today I wanted to make sure I could post my blog on time (i.e. befor midnight) so here are some pictures from an early walk.

Since I don't know bird names (besides Twiddy and Big Bird) I cannot identify the bird in the pictures. If this is the first sighting I will call it the Folsom Blackbird with the Red Tattoo.

Notice the nice tat on the bird.

Another close up. I showed it one of my tattoos and the bird took notice.

Me veía como si estuviera loco.
I bid you goodbye Mr. Bird. Fly bird fly, up, up to the sky.

Adíos mi pájaro bonito.

309 - Kicking it at Zuma Beach

This is another blog that's a little late. We got back in Sacramento late last night and did not get a chance to post, so these are my pictures for yesterday (Sunday June8)
Anyway, after everybody woke up today someone suggested going to the beach. So we packed a whole bunch of people into 3 cars (one was already at the beach) and headed to Zuma beach. Here's one view looking back. When I was in college I lived in a motel overlooking most of Zuma, ahh to be young and free.

Seagulls seemed to be all over, I liked this one on the lifeguard shack, the beach was packed and most of the towers had at least one lifeguard.

Two birds with one shot.

Marcus playing with baby girl Jayden. It was a wonderful day in paradise.

310 - Alice Graduates

Alice's after graduation pictures. The Alvarez-Daily clan. Oh yeah, Mariana and Alice are working on our family crest which will become a tatoo. We'll see if and when that works out.
Starting out a short everning for some Alice and Gabe enjoying some balut, a Filipino delicacy, actually they were the only two brave enought to try it. Duck embryos for some reason does not sound appetizing for me.

Note: I started this blog about an hour late and as I type this I can hear the boys downstairs sharing stories. Family is the best thing in life, at least my life.

311 - Driving to Ventura Freeway

This was my view during most of the day today as we drove to L.A. for Alice's graduation tomorrow. I took some pictures of her baccalaureate mass but when it was time to take a picture or two of Alice most of the sunlight was gone so the pictures turned out blury. Tomorrow's graduation will provide a better opportunity. I did notice a parent in the audience that looked familiar and it turned out to be Powers Boothe who is one of the main characters in one of my favorite movies Tombstone. I got a chance to chat with him for a couple of minutes (he has a kids graduating in Alice's class).

312 - Blogger Equipment

This is the equipment I use to post my daily blog. A Dell Inspiron 640m and my Sony DSLR A100 are my main tools. I used my old reliable (most of the time) Sony DSC-H5. I have a 4Gig memory stick for the A100 which I've run out of room only once. That once though made me realize that it would be nice to have a backup stick just in case. I'll be buying another 4Gig stick in the next few days.

313 to 365 Car Wash

A lot dust has been flying around with winds kicking up. I took this picture from inside my car as I got a car wash. As you can see it was getting hard to see out the front window. Got some gas, which is still getting more expensive, and then drove through the car wash. Even though I got home late none of the kids were around. Besides work it has been a quiet day today. Who knows what tomorrow holds.

314 Faux Trees

So, this is another shot just around the corner from work. On my way back from lunch with Sherryl, Nilesh, Katie, and Jay we drove by this tree that I've been meaning to take a picture of. I made a mental note to make sure I took a picture after work. The "tree" is actually a Distributed Antenna System. I've seen a few of these but besides this one I've forgotten where I've seen the others. It's kind of like work. Before I worked where I do now I used to drive under power lines, passed generation sites, and saw solar and wind structures but never really thought about their role on the California power grid. Now I notice them everywhere.

315 of 365 Sunset

Running out of time for today's photo, I went outside and took a picture of the sunset through the leaves of our tree.

316 - Down the Street From Work

After work today (1/2 shift) I grabbed a sandwich and drove towards towards the American River on the high side of Nimbus Dam. I think the ducks or geese get fed 'cause I saw around 30 just swimming about. Here's some making their way towards some kayakers.
Here's some kayakers following the ducks.
A quiet scene.
Found an isolated pond away from the river.
Some fish offspring hanging on inside the pond.
Have no idea what these flowers are. I took pictures of other flora around the river but won't even try to tell you what they were since it would show my ignorance when it comes to nature. Watts and East L.A.(where I grew up) have their own concrete jungle.
These dandelions started the picture taking for the day. I had to take a picture before I blew the dandelions away. There are so many beautiful places in and around Folsom. I'm just glad I take my camera everywhere, well almost everywhere.
